What Is Airflow Polishing?

Airflow polishing (also known as air polishing teeth or air teeth cleaning) is an advanced dental hygiene treatment that uses a controlled jet of compressed air, warm water, and ultra-fine biocompatible powder to clean, polish, and remove stains from the surface of your teeth. Unlike traditional scaling, an air polisher dental system requires no metal instruments to touch your teeth directly, making it one of the most comfortable professional cleaning methods available.

The powder used in the airflow system is typically made from erythritol or glycine, both of which are far gentler on enamel than traditional polishing pastes. These particles are propelled at precise angles onto the tooth surface, breaking apart plaque, biofilm, and discolouration caused by coffee, tea, red wine, tobacco, turmeric, and other dietary stains common in the UAE.

Airflow tooth polishing is safe for use on natural teeth, dental implants, veneers, crowns, bridges, and orthodontic brackets. It reaches areas that traditional cleaning instruments often miss, including between tightly spaced teeth, around gum pockets, and along the margins of dental restorations. At our Al Karama clinic in Dubai, we use the EMS Airflow system as part of our standard hygiene protocol for patients who want the gentlest, most thorough clean available.

Step by step procedure

01

Step 1: Pre-Treatment Assessment

Your dental hygienist examines your teeth and gums, checks for tartar deposits, and assesses the level and type of staining. If you have sensitive teeth, implants, or braces, this is noted so the powder type and pressure are adjusted accordingly.

02

Step 2: Disclosing Agent (Optional)

A harmless coloured dye may be applied to your teeth to highlight areas where plaque and biofilm are concentrated. This helps the hygienist target exactly where cleaning is needed most and ensures nothing is missed.

03

Step 3: Airflow Polishing

The air polisher handpiece is held at a precise angle and moved systematically across all tooth surfaces. A fine stream of air, warm water, and erythritol or glycine powder lifts plaque, biofilm, and surface stains without any scraping or vibration. Most patients describe the sensation as a gentle warm spray.

04

Step 4: Subgingival Cleaning (If Needed)

For patients with gum pockets deeper than 3mm, the hygienist may use the Airflow Perioflow nozzle to deliver gentle cleaning powder below the gum line. This removes bacterial biofilm from areas that brushing and flossing cannot reach, and is far more comfortable than traditional subgingival scaling.

05

Step 5: Ultrasonic Scaling (If Needed)

If hardened calculus (tartar) is present on any tooth, the hygienist will use a piezoelectric ultrasonic scaler to remove it. Airflow alone cannot remove calcified deposits, so scaling is sometimes necessary as a complement. This is performed gently and only where needed.

06

Step 6: Final Rinse and Shade Check

Your teeth are rinsed, any remaining powder is cleared away, and the hygienist reviews the result with you. Many patients notice a visible improvement in brightness and smoothness immediately. A fluoride varnish may be applied for additional enamel protection.

Frequently Asked Question

How often should I get airflow polishing? −
Most patients benefit from an airflow polishing session every 6 months as part of their routine hygiene appointment. Patients with gum disease, heavy staining, braces, or implants may need sessions every 3 to 4 months for optimal results.
How long does an airflow polishing appointment take? +
A standard airflow session takes 20 to 30 minutes. A combined airflow and ultrasonic scaling session takes 40 to 50 minutes. Periodontal airflow sessions take 30 to 45 minutes. Most patients are in and out of the clinic within an hour.
Can airflow stain removal work on coffee and tobacco stains? +
Yes. Airflow stain removal is highly effective for stains caused by coffee, tea, red wine, tobacco, shisha, turmeric, and other dietary sources common in Dubai. Patients often see a visible difference immediately after a single session.
Is air polishing teeth safe for sensitive teeth? +
Yes. Air polishing teeth is one of the gentlest professional cleaning options available. There is no metal on tooth contact, no vibration, and the water temperature is warm. Most patients with moderate to severe sensitivity tolerate airflow polishing comfortably without any anesthesia.
Is airflow polishing better than normal teeth cleaning? +
Airflow polishing is more comfortable and better at removing stains and biofilm than traditional polishing paste. However, it cannot remove hardened tartar (calculus), so for patients with calculus build up, a combined airflow and ultrasonic scaling session delivers the best result.
How much does airflow polishing cost in Dubai? +
Standard airflow polishing starts from AED 450 at our Al Karama clinic. A combined airflow and ultrasonic scaling session starts from AED 600. Airflow periodontal (subgingival) cleaning starts from AED 700. Emirates Platinum members receive 40% off all services.
Is airflow polishing covered by dental insurance in Dubai? +
Many dental insurance plans in Dubai cover routine hygiene appointments, which may include airflow polishing as part of the cleaning. Coverage depends on your specific provider and plan. Our team can help you check your policy at the time of booking.
Does airflow polishing hurt? +
No. Most patients describe the sensation as a gentle warm spray, similar to a water flosser. There is no scraping, vibration, or sharp contact. It is one of the most comfortable dental hygiene treatments available and is especially suitable for patients who have avoided cleanings due to past discomfort.
Can airflow polishing whiten my teeth? +
Airflow polishing removes surface stains and restores your natural tooth shade, so teeth often look noticeably brighter afterward. However, it does not chemically bleach teeth. For deeper whitening beyond your natural shade, we recommend combining airflow with our professional teeth whitening service.
Is airflow polishing safe for dental implants and veneers? +
Yes. An air polisher dental system is specifically recommended for cleaning around implants, veneers, crowns, and ceramic restorations. The fine powder and gentle spray will not scratch, damage, or dislodge restorations unlike some traditional metal instruments.
