Why Children Get Cavities, and Why They Spread Faster

Cavities in children form the same way they do in adults. Bacteria in the mouth feed on sugars from food and drink, produce acid, and that acid slowly dissolves the enamel until a hole forms. What makes cavities in kids different is speed. The enamel on a milk tooth is much thinner than on an adult tooth, so decay reaches the softer layer underneath far more quickly, sometimes within months rather than years.

Certain habits make it worse. Bedtime bottles of milk or juice, frequent snacking, sugary drinks in the heat, and the gap between when a child starts brushing alone and when they are actually good at it, usually around age seven. The back molars are the most common site, because the grooves on their chewing surface trap food that a child's brushing misses.

This is why a cavity in a milk tooth still needs treating even though the tooth will eventually fall out. An untreated cavity reaches the nerve, causes pain and infection, and can damage the adult tooth still forming in the gum underneath. Losing a milk tooth early also lets the neighbouring teeth drift into the gap, which is one of the most common reasons a child later needs braces.

How a Kids Cavity Filling Works, Step by Step

Examination and X-ray if needed

The dentist examines the tooth and, where the cavity sits between teeth or its depth is unclear, takes a small low dose digital X-ray. We never X-ray a child routinely without a clinical reason.

Explaining it to your child

Before anything happens, we show your child what we are going to do in words they understand. A tooth gets a little clean and then a little patch. Children handle treatment far better when nothing is a surprise.

Numbing the area

We apply a numbing gel first so your child does not feel the anaesthetic itself. Once the tooth is fully numb, the treatment is completely painless. Most children are surprised that they felt nothing at all.

Removing the decay and placing the filling

The decayed part of the tooth is gently removed, the area is cleaned, and the tooth coloured filling is placed, shaped to match the tooth, and hardened with a light. This is the quickest part of the appointment.

Checking the bite and aftercare

We check your child can bite comfortably, polish the filling, and explain aftercare to you. Your child leaves with a sticker and, more usefully, with the knowledge that a dental filling is nothing to fear.

Before, during and after your child's filling

Before

  • Book a morning slot if your child is young, when they are rested and cooperative
  • Give them a light meal beforehand, since they should not eat while numb
  • Avoid words like pain, needle and drill at home, even in reassurance
  • Tell us in advance if your child is anxious or had a difficult experience at another clinic

During

  • You stay with your child for the whole appointment
  • The tooth is fully numbed, so your child feels no pain
  • Every step is explained before it happens, at your child's pace
  • We stop whenever your child needs a break

After

  • Wait until the numbness fully wears off before eating, usually one to two hours
  • Watch that your child does not bite their numb lip or cheek, which is the most common after visit issue
  • Avoid very hard or sticky foods on that side for the rest of the day
  • Brush and floss as normal from the same evening
  • Call us if your child bites unevenly on the filling or has any discomfort after a day or two

  • The decay has reached the nerve, which needs a pulpectomy first
  • Too little healthy tooth remains to hold a filling, where a crown is the better option
  • The tooth is already loose and the adult tooth is about to come through, where treatment may not be needed at all
  • There is active infection or swelling, which we treat before restoring the tooth

What are the different cavity filling types for children? +
