When Should a Child First See an Orthodontist?
Kids Orthodontics, explained

When Should a Child First See an Orthodontist?

Around age seven. That is the age most orthodontic guidelines recommend for a first assessment, and it surprises most parents because a seven year old still has a mouth full of milk teeth. That is precisely the point. At seven, enough adult teeth have arrived to show how the bite is developing, while the jaw is still growing and can still be guided.

An early assessment does not mean early braces. In most cases the orthodontist simply monitors your child every six to twelve months until the right moment arrives. In a smaller number of cases, a short course of early treatment at eight or nine prevents a much longer, more complex course at fourteen. Knowing which group your child falls into is the whole value of the visit.

If your child is already older than seven, nothing is lost. Orthodontic treatment works at any age, and the majority of children are treated in their early teens once the adult teeth are in place. Book the assessment whenever you are reading this, not at some future date.

Your options Option Best for What to know
Best for Metal braces Children and teenagers, all case types The most versatile and most affordable fixed option. Coloured bands are genuinely popular with children. From AED 5,000 per arch.
How it is planned Ceramic braces Teenagers who want something discreet Tooth coloured brackets that blend with the teeth, working the same way as metal braces. From AED 7,000 per arch.
Timeline Clear aligners for children Older children and teenagers, mild to moderate cases Removable and nearly invisible, but they only work when actually worn 20 to 22 hours a day. Best for a responsible child. CONFIRM whether the clinic provides Invisalign First for ages 6 to 10.
Space maintainer A milk tooth lost early Holds the gap open so the adult tooth has room to come through straight. Prevents a much larger problem later. CONFIRM availability and price.
Habit breaking appliance Thumb sucking or tongue thrusting past age five Stops the habit that is pushing the teeth out of position, often avoiding the need for later correction. CONFIRM availability and price.
Palatal expander A narrow upper jaw or a crossbite Widens the upper jaw gently while it is still growing. Only possible before growth finishes, which is why age matters. CONFIRM availability and price.
Retainers Every child, after any treatment Non negotiable. Teeth move back without them. From AED 600.

Your treatment journey

Step by step procedure : What Happens at Your Child's Orthodontic Assessment

Your plan and timing are individual.

Step 1 of 5

Examination

The orthodontist examines your child's teeth, bite and jaw, and asks about habits such as thumb sucking, mouth breathing and any difficulty chewing.

Step 2 of 5

X-rays and photographs

Where needed, we take an X-ray to see the adult teeth still under the gum and how the jaw is developing. This is what tells us whether crowding is coming before it is visible.

Step 3 of 5

Diagnosis explained to you

We show you what we have found on the images, not just describe it. Parents make better decisions when they can see the problem themselves.

Step 4 of 5

A clear recommendation

You leave with one of three answers. Nothing is needed and we review in twelve months. Something is needed now and here is what, why and what it costs. Or nothing is needed yet but treatment is likely at a given age, so plan for it.

Step 5 of 5

Treatment plan and costs in writing

If treatment is recommended, you get the appliance, the expected duration, the total cost and the payment options in writing before you commit to anything.

A personalised plan. Clear guidance at every step.
A personal assessment comes first

Could this treatment suit you?

Your dentist confirms what is right for you after an examination.

Could this treatment suit you?

Good candidates

  • Book an assessment if
  • Your child is around seven and has never had an orthodontic assessment
  • You have noticed crowding, gaps, protruding teeth or a bite that does not meet
  • Your child still sucks a thumb or pushes the tongue against the teeth
  • A milk tooth was lost early and the gap is closing
  • Your child is a teenager and the adult teeth have come through crooked
  • Another clinic has recommended braces and you want a second opinion

Not recommended for

  • Not enough adult teeth have come through to make treatment worthwhile yet
  • The issue is minor and may self correct as the jaw grows
  • Cavities or gum inflammation need treating first
  • The case needs jaw surgery, which we refer to a specialist centre

Your dentist confirms suitability after an examination.

Every stage, explained

Before, during & after treatment

Before, during & after treatment
01

Before starting

  • Any cavities or gum problems are treated first, since braces cannot go on an unhealthy mouth
  • We check your insurance for orthodontic cover, which is the benefit most commonly excluded
  • We agree the full cost and payment plan in writing
  • Your child is shown exactly what the appliance looks like and how it will feel
02

During treatment

  • Adjustment visits every four to eight weeks, each one short
  • Mild pressure for a few days after fitting and after each adjustment, which is normal and settles quickly
  • Extra care with brushing, and avoiding hard and sticky foods
  • Regular checkups and cleaning continue alongside the orthodontic visits
03

After treatment

  • Retainers are fitted immediately, and must be worn exactly as instructed
  • Review appointments to check the result is holding
  • Teeth move throughout life, so retainer wear is long term, not a few months

Frequently Asked Questions

At what age should my child see an orthodontist?

Around age seven. Enough adult teeth have arrived by then to show how the bite is developing, while the jaw is still growing and can be guided. An early assessment does not mean early braces, and in most cases we simply monitor your child until the right time.

Is an orthodontist a surgeon?

No. An orthodontist is a dentist with additional specialist training in correcting the position of teeth and jaws using braces, aligners and other appliances. Orthodontic treatment involves no surgery. A small number of severe jaw cases need a maxillofacial surgeon, and we refer those to a specialist centre.

What is interceptive orthodontics for kids?

Interceptive orthodontics means treating a developing problem while your child's jaw is still growing, usually between ages seven and ten, rather than waiting and correcting a finished problem later. It can create space for adult teeth, correct a crossbite, or stop a habit pushing the teeth out of position.

Does my child really need braces, or will the teeth straighten themselves?

Some minor irregularities do improve as the jaw grows, and we will tell you when that is the likely outcome. Crowding, crossbites and protruding front teeth do not self correct. The assessment is what separates the two, which is why it is worth booking even when you suspect nothing is wrong.

How much does orthodontic treatment for kids cost in Dubai?

At our Al Karama clinic, metal braces start from AED 5,000 per arch and AED 6,500 for both arches, ceramic braces from AED 7,000 per arch, and clear aligners from AED 8,000. Retainers start from AED 600. The assessment fee and interceptive appliance prices are confirmed at your consultation, and flexible payment plans are available.

Is orthodontic treatment covered by insurance in Dubai?

Sometimes. Some dental plans include an orthodontic benefit, often with a lifetime limit, while many exclude it entirely. It is worth checking your policy well before your child reaches braces age. Our team will check it for you when you book.

How long does treatment take?

Most full orthodontic treatments take twelve to twenty four months depending on the case. Early interceptive treatment is shorter, usually six to eighteen months, followed by a rest period. Your orthodontist gives you an estimated timeline after the assessment.

Do braces hurt?

Your child will feel mild pressure for a few days after the braces are fitted and after each adjustment. This is normal and a sign the teeth are moving. It settles quickly and is easily managed.

Are there orthodontics doctors for kids in Al Karama?

Yes. Jesh and Mikh Dental Clinic offers orthodontic treatment for children at our Al Karama clinic, a short walk from ADCB and Max Metro stations, with parking available. Dr. Srinivaisa Rao Bogavilli treats orthodontic patients across Dubai and Sharjah.

Can my child have clear aligners instead of braces?

In many cases yes, for mild to moderate cases in older children and teenagers. Aligners only work when worn 20 to 22 hours a day, so they suit a child who will follow that consistently. We will advise honestly at the assessment whether your child is a good candidate.

What if my child is already a teenager, is it too late?

Not at all. Most orthodontic treatment happens in the early teens once the adult teeth are in place. Treatment works at any age, including adulthood.

Will my child need to wear a retainer afterwards?

Yes, and this is not optional. Teeth move throughout life, and without retainer wear the result will gradually be lost. Retainers start from AED 600 and we explain the wear schedule clearly when treatment finishes.
