Severe tooth pain, facial swelling or an injured tooth can be frightening. The first step is to identify any sign that needs hospital emergency care, then contact a dentist and explain exactly what happened. Early advice can sometimes improve the chance of saving a tooth and can prevent an infection from becoming more serious.

Urgent safety note: Go to an emergency department or call local emergency services if you have trouble breathing, swallowing or speaking; heavy bleeding that will not stop; a serious injury to the face or jaw; swelling affecting the eye or vision; or rapidly increasing mouth or facial swelling. Do not wait for a routine dental appointment.

Call or WhatsApp +971 52 100 0425 and state:

• when the problem started;

• where the pain or swelling is located;

• whether there was a fall, impact or broken tooth;

• whether you have fever, bleeding or difficulty opening your mouth;

• medicines taken, allergies and relevant medical conditions.

The clinic hours are Monday–Saturday, 10:00 AM–9:00 PM

* Severe toothache

Rinse gently with warm water and use floss carefully if food may be trapped. Do not put aspirin or another painkiller directly on the tooth or gum because it can irritate tissue. Ask a pharmacist or clinician about pain relief that is safe for you, and arrange a dental assessment.

* Knocked-out permanent tooth

Hold the tooth by the white crown, not the root. If it is dirty, rinse it gently without scrubbing. If possible, place it back in the socket without forcing it. Otherwise keep it moist in milk or an appropriate tooth-preservation product and seek dental care immediately. Do not reinsert a baby tooth.

* Broken or cracked tooth

Rinse the mouth with warm water. Apply a cold compress to the outside of the face if there is swelling. Keep any broken fragment in a clean container and contact a dentist promptly.

* Swelling or suspected abscess

A dental abscess needs urgent dental treatment and will not be cured by pain relief alone. Do not squeeze or puncture the swelling. Seek hospital emergency care for breathing or swallowing difficulty, eye involvement or extensive swelling.

* Bleeding after an injury or extraction

Apply firm pressure with clean gauze. If bleeding is heavy, does not slow, or is linked to a serious injury, seek emergency medical care. Patients taking blood thinners should tell the treating clinician and should not stop prescribed medicine unless instructed by their doctor.

The dentist may examine the area, take an X-ray when indicated, control pain or bleeding, drain an infection, place a temporary restoration or discuss treatment such as root canal therapy or extraction. The first appointment may stabilise the problem; definitive treatment can require another visit. Ask for the estimated fee before treatment when the situation allows.

blog-image Frequently asked questions

1. Can antibiotics cure toothache or an abscess?

Antibiotics are not appropriate for every toothache and do not remove the dental cause. A dentist must assess whether they are needed and what treatment will control the source of infection.

2. Can I wait until tomorrow?

That depends on the symptoms. Rapidly increasing swelling, fever with worsening illness, uncontrolled bleeding, trauma or breathing and swallowing problems need urgent assessment. If unsure, call a dentist or medical emergency service immediately.

3. Do I need an appointment?

Call ahead whenever possible so the team can triage the problem, confirm availability and prepare for your arrival.
