By your child's first birthday, or as soon as their first tooth comes through, whichever happens first. At that age there is almost nothing to treat, which is exactly the point. The visit is short, nothing uncomfortable happens, and your child learns that this room is safe long before they ever need anything done in it.

What happens at the first appointment

You stay with your child throughout. The dentist introduces themselves, shows your child the chair and the mirror, and lets them touch the instruments if they want to. Then comes a gentle look at the teeth and gums, a check on how the jaw is developing, and a count of the teeth, which small children usually enjoy. If everything is healthy, that is the whole visit.

We then talk to you, not at you, about brushing technique, fluoride toothpaste amounts, bottles and juice, dummies and thumb sucking, and what to expect as more teeth arrive. Most parents leave with two or three things they were doing slightly wrong, which is normal and easily fixed.

How to prepare your child

Talk about it positively at home and avoid words like pain, needle, drill or hurt, even in reassurance, because children hear the word and not the reassurance.
